Oh Carolina

by Tom on Jun.26, 2006, under Uncategorized

So we moved to North Carolina.

Oh, I’m sorry - did you miss something? Yeah, with my lack of updating, you missed the major life events that have taken place in the last few months or so. Let’s get you up to speed:

  • Convinced in-laws that moving from Long Island would be in their best interest.
  • Watched as brother-in-law took a trip down to North Carolina and bought a house.
  • Watched in horror as in-laws took trip down to see house and bought house of their own.
  • Knowing the ineviatable, took our time and found a house we liked, negociated well, and got a good price on it, and bought it.
  • Quit job.
  • Watched as baby #2 entered the world.
  • Moved to North Carolina.

This all took place in approximately two months. TWO. While from the outside it might seem like we were a little rushed, it was an action we had to take. New York just wasn’t going to up and offer us a house. An entry-level house in a questionable area is $300-400k. The average house went for $1.1 million in Bridgehampton, my fire district. So while the idea would have been to stay in my hometown and be all folky, it just wasn’t going to happen. It had nothing to do with hard work or job choice. It just wasn’t going to happen.

So we moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. It had a lot to offer - decent proximity to New York, four seasons of weather (although admittedly hotter and less of a “winter” than New York), and a great tech industry so that I can get a good job. Also, housing prices are good with a greatly growing community - while we live in a suburban area on a fifth of an acre, we still have a decent amount of space. At the same time, we have numerous stores and a mall all within 15 minutes - many within 5.

So we’ve got a house - here’s a link in case you’re interested.  It’s got a “bar” (big long counter not in a kitchen with a microwave and mini-fridge in it, but no tap or anything) and a hot tub, and I’m liking the location more and more.  Still don’t really know my neighbors that well (we had one across the street neighbor bring over some cookies and say hi, and a few waves from passerbys), but all that will change soon enough.

Right?

Congrats! Any leads on jobs yet?

Mucho interviews, something I’m not used to up north. Just had one today, which makes for at least a half-dozen I’ve been on recently. I’m beginning to get good at them.
